Sample lesson: Knit & Purl essentials

This is how Yarn Academy lessons look: clean steps, short checks, and a practical drill.

Checklist

  • Cast on 20 stitches (long-tail or knitted cast-on).
  • Knit 2 rows focusing on even tension.
  • Purl 2 rows; keep yarn position consistent.
  • Repeat for 6 rows total.
  • Bind off loosely; check edge elasticity.

Self-check

If purl rows look tighter: relax the working yarn and avoid pulling after each stitch.

If edges curl: that’s normal for stockinette; add garter edges later.

If stitches split: use rounder-tipped needles or slow down on purl.

Mini drill (12 minutes)

Use the timer on the page: alternate 10 knit stitches + 10 purl stitches. Aim for consistency, not speed.
